Community Relations operates within Magherafelt District Council to enhance and build on the good Community Relations which exist throughout the area. Local groups are eager to overcome the tensions that arise from sectarian strife, and Magherafelt Community Relations programme has led to greater contact between the groups and to decreased isolation and misunderstanding.

In line with the current government ethos of community self help, the role of a Council's Community Relations is to support community groups. This support is often financial, but more important is the practical advice, information, education, training and the creation of suitable neutral venues in which groups can meet. In the Magherafelt area there is a tremendous wealth of voluntary endeavour and energy evident. It is the local authority's role to assist this process of community development and through it tackle problems of Community Relations.
