Registration Services in Magherafelt District Council

The General Register Office (GRO) is part of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) and is responsible for the administration and control of civil registration of births, adoptions, deaths and marriages as well as the formality of marriages and the conduct of civil marriages. The main functions of the GRO are as follows:

  • The administration of the registration of births (live and still), deaths and marriages;
  • The formalities relating to marriage and the conduct of civil marriages;
  • The maintenance of historic records of birth, deaths, marriages and adoptions;
  • The production of certified copies of birth, death and marriage certificates to applicants on request;
  • The preparation and publication of annual birth, death, marriage, divorce and population statistics; and
  • The registration of adoptions.

The GRO has a District Registration Office in each of the twenty-six Councils. Magherafelt District Council's Registration Office is located in the main Council Offices at 50 Ballyronan Road, Magherafelt.
