As well as product specific regulations, The General Product Safety Regulations 1994 apply to all new and second-hand consumer products. Products covered include clothing, medicines, DIY tools and equipment, food and drink, household goods, nursery goods etc.

Cycle Helmet Safety

Cycle Helmet Safety

A recent study conducted in Northern Ireland revealed that 77% of cycle helmets examined did not comply with requirements for safety.

The attached leaflet and poster have been designed to provide customers with safety information when choosing and wearing helmets. Copies of the leaflets will be provided to local cycling helmet suppliers and retailers located in the Magherafelt District area for distribution.

Furniture

The Furniture and Furniture (Fire Safety) Regulations apply to all new and second hand furniture including furniture in rented accommodation.

All furniture must be labelled with a display label and a permanent label providing information on its fire resistance.

Toy Safety

All toys supplied in the UK are subject to the Toys (Safety) Regulations 1995. All toys must satisfy the essential safety requirements and bear a CE mark to indicate that it can move freely within the Community market, together with details of the address of the person who first placed the toy on the market in EC.

The Council has the authority to remove unsafe products from the market and bring prosecutions against suppliers and manufacturers.
