Expansion to VCU In-Vessel Composting Plant
Magherafelt District Council has secured planning permission to extend its state of the art Vertical Composting Unit (VCU) at 50 Ballyronan Road, Magherafelt.

Erected in September 2005 the VCU in-vessel composter was commissioned by the Council to process the material collected as part of its brown bin composting scheme.

The Council currently operates 4 VCU's in 2 separate stages but with the planned extension that would increase to 6 VCU's with 3 in each stage, giving the Council the additional processing capacity required to extend the brown bin scheme to other parts of the District. At present the Council collects brown bins form approximately 7,500 homes throughout the District. This expansion would allow them to increase that number to over 10,000 households.

The plant is the only one of its kind in Nortehrn Ireland and is a key component of the Council's waste management strategy for the diversion of waste from landfill. This development sets the Council at the very cutting edge of waste management in Northern Ireland and puts it in a very strong position to meet its targets under the Northern Ireland Landfill Allowances Scheme and the European Landfill Directive.

£500 Cash Reward for Eco-Schools in Magherafelt
Magherafelt Dristrict Council has long been a supporter of the Eco-Schools Programme which promotes sustainability within our local schools. However with the new revised cirriculum the Council believes that it is now time to take that support to another level. As an incentive to local schools to take up the Eco-Schools challenge Magherafelt District Council is offering a £500 cash reward to any school within its District which obtains the coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag award.
